Extraliga to be played with 8 teams

In 2017 Czech Extraliga saw extension from 8 to 10 teams. At that time, this step caused a lot of questions and emotions. Top Czech league is now expected to see more changes. Starting with 2022 season, Extraliga will be played with 8 teams.

ČBA announced this change via their Facebook page, following with more information on their web. This means Extraliga will see first batch of changes in season 2021, where only the top 2 teams in Promotion League (now “Middle 8”) will guarantee their stay in Extraliga next season (as opposed to 4 teams). The remaining 6 teams will play First League. Extraliga teams will also play at least 40 games next season.

In 2022 season, the number of the games played will ease up, where each team will play at least 36 games. If the team plays in the finals, they will play 48 games instead of 52. The system of the league will be similar to that in 2021 season with the only exception being Middle 8 turning into Middle 6, with 6 teams playing. Here, 7th and 8th team from Extraliga table, and first 4 teams from First League table will play for two spots in Extraliga.

Semifinal series format will be kept in playoff, with Best of 5 system. Czech series will then see Best of 7 (in season 2022, we have no information about season 2021).

Additionally, ČBA will attempt to involve teams from lower tiers, where bottom teams from First League and winners of Regional leagues will square against each other. This system will be called Low 8 (Low 6 in season 2022). Winners of the Regional leagues will be able to win their spot in the First League.
