U12 European Championship: Czechs took silver medals
Czech U12 had to wait till the finals to be beaten. Reigning champions from Italy returned the loss from the group stage, but despite that, the win didn’t come easy for them.
The final game offered dramatic moments, where pitchers dominated on both sides. Batters couldn’t score until the last inning. Alexandr Nepožitek commanded the Czech mound till the fifth inning, only allowing 4 hits and no runs. He also added 7 SO.
Dominik Durlin then threw the fifth inning, following the suit of his teammate and leaving Italy without runs. However, Italy started the sixth inning with a hit and a walk and Durlin came out of the game. Instead, Czechs sent in Petr Fejt who managed to keep his opponents scoreless, despite the situation.
Since Czechs couldn’t score either, the game went to extra inning. The team couldn’t hold Italy batters, however, and after six scored runs, helped by an error in the defense, Italy took the 6-0 lead. Czech team couldn’t respond and earned their first loss of the tournament, which also meant the final second place.
After 6-0 loss and silver medals, Czechs showed they belong to the best Europe has to offer in U12 category. Czech Republic is also the most successful team of U12 European Championship, as they earned 13 medals since 2006, when the competition begun. As the only country playing the championship, they have double digit number of medals. Currently, Czechs boast 7 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals. Behind them are Russians and Italy. Additionally, both Czechs and Italy secured a spot at U12 World Championship for their nations.
