WC U23: Fantastic! Czechs beat reigning world champions Mexico

Mexico, the hosting country, awaited the Czech team in their first game of the 2021 U23 World Championship. The team who is currently the reigning champion, promised to be a tough opponent.

The game started almost 100 minutes later than planned, due to a strong rainstorm. In the end it started at 09:00 pm local time. Czechs started Ondřej Satoria, while home team went with Saúl Castellanos.

First two innings were dominated by the pitchers, and so we had to wait till the third inning for the first runs scored. After inaccurate pitching from Castellanos Czechs loaded the bases, for Vojtěch Menšík to bat in the first run. The next batter did even better, when Marek Chlup’s base clearing hit to the left field saw Czechs take the 4-0 lead.

Jakub Kubica started the fourth inning with a walk, to take advantage of a wild pitch from Castellanos and his substitute Mario Albertos Urtiz, to get the fifth Czech run.

The first significant troubles for Ondřej Satoria came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when first two batters reached the bases. He was then able to record the first out with a strikeout and were it not for an inaccurate throw from Filip Smola, Mexico could have stayed with zero in the run column. The third out came from Michal Kovala, who came in for Satoria. He first walked a batter, allowing Mexico to load the bases. However, next batter was out in the infield and Czech got all three outs to get out of the inning.

Michal Kovala, along with the defense, was able to play all three outs and upset the home team. Czechs entered the championship in the best way possible and certainly gained confidence before the game against Taiwan.
