EXL: David Mergans moves to Italy
Young and talented pitcher of Draci Brno David Mergans decided to change teams. He will not play the upcoming season in Extraliga, but instead opted to move to Serie B, where he joined Milano Baseball 1946.
Brno club hence loses a starting pitcher who threw 1.71 ERA and 40 SO in 42 IP in the regular season last year.
„I got to it by chance, one day a scout wrote me, asking whether I wanted to play abroad, and I replied yes, even though I didn’t hold my breath, but suddenly there were several offers from Italian clubs and the one from Milano caught my interest, so I told myself, why not. It will be a tremendous experience,“ said young national pitcher for club webpage.
Milano club has a storied history, as it was founded in 1946 and since then they won 8 championships in Italy. They also won European Championship Cup three times. Their last huge victory is dated to 1992, when Milano won CEB Supercup. In 2003, however, they hit hard times financially and were demoted to Serie C1. In the previous year Milano returned to Serie A as a part of the league extension, but finished last in the division with 2 wins and 14 loses.
