LBFPR: Arecibo celebrates tenth title
Porto Rico women’s baseball league (LBFPR) knows the league’s winner for 2021. After a two year break it is the players of the most successful league’s team Las Lobas de Arecibo, who were crowned the champions, after they beat 2019 champions Artisans 3-1.
The series was leveled at 1-1 after the first week, when Janiliz Riviera dominated the first game for Arecibo. Her team won 9-0 grabbing the lead in the series. Las Piedras didn’t give up, however, and thanks to the pitcher of the year, Angelis Rivera, who threw a complete game and improved her record to 11-0, they leveled the series. The game was decided by a single from Nayra Sánchez, who sent Las Piedras ahead in the sixth inning. Her team then held the 5-4 lead.
Series continued next week at the Las Piedras field, however, the home team didn’t start well. In the third game of the series Arecibo threw a shutout after Janiliz Riviera showed her magic on the mound once again. Arecibo took the lead in the series after 5-0 win.
Important fourth game started chaotically. Las Piedras were winning 6-2 after the first inning. However, Arecibo found the strength at bat lowering the score to 6-5 in the fifth inning, to take the 7-6 lead in the sixth, thanks to a double from Luz Feliciano. The new champions were helped by the pitching change, when young Danna González threw 5.1 inning, only allowing 2 hits and no runs. The score didn’t change and Arecibo could celebrate their tenth championship.
Angelis Rivera also took the first loss in the season after she threw the complete game, allowing 11 hits, 7 runs, even if three of them were due to defensive errors.
