UK: The second edition of Women’s Baseball UK League starts today
The Great Britain will see the second edition of WB-UK League start today. Eight teams, divided into two divisions, will play one another to determine the winner in the North and the South. The winners will then face each other in WB-UK National Championship on 17th of September to determine the new champion.
There are several new names to be seen in the league this year. Leicester Diamonds will start on 23rd of April against Telford 26ers. The North Division will also see the newcomers from Long Eaton Lightning, and Sheffield Bruins, who finished the previous season with 7 wins and 3 loses.
The reigning champions from Belles Baseball will play in South Division along with Bristol Bobcats and London Mayhem, who were formed from London team Mets. WB-UK Nomads, who allows the players without a team to still participate in the league moves from Scotland to the south of the UK as well.
Unfortunately, we won’t see Cambridge Valkyries, who didn’t sign up for the league. Aberdeen Thistles, playing in the Scotland division in the previous season won’t play in the league either, however, they are one of four teams who continue to practice and are seeking the friendly games.
It is positive to see currently the only nation-wide women’s baseball league in Europe continue to grow. Great Britain will play in European Women’s Baseball Championship for the first time this summer and it will be interesting to see how the game experience translate into their performance against the national teams from the previous season, Czech Republic being one of them.
