EXL: Třebíč back in the chase for semifinals
Friday and Saturday saw Extraliga continue with more games. Their results didn’t make the situation in the second half of the inning any clearer.
Třebíč Nuclears – Arrows Ostrava
The series between Arrows and Nuclears started on Friday in Ostrava. However, the game had to be stopped in the fourth inning due to heavy rains. Home team was leading 1-0 at the time and the game was finished on Saturday at Vysočina. And Třebíč took advantage of that. They sent Ryan Johnson on the mound, who managed to hold Arrows batters back and didn’t allow them any runs. Nuclears tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning and the score remained unchanged until the extra innings. Nuclears took 2-1 lead they needed to keep. Arrows was only centimeters away from the win, but Lukáš Malý caught the contact from Dan Černý in the outfield that looked like it was headed out of the park.
Home team wanted to get another win in the second game of the double header. This time they were helped by duo Orlando Romero and Jeffrey Barto. They didn’t allow any runs to Arrows and striked out 13 batters. An excellent performance from Alec Lemmon wasn’t enough for Ostrava, either. Lemmon threw 8 innings with 10 SO. However, home team was able to score 2 runs against him in the bottom half of the second inning, which turned out to be decisive. Třebíč thus beat Ostrava 2-0, despite being outhitted 2-6.
Draci Brno – Eagles Praha
This series seems to be firm in hands of Brno team. Draci only allowed Eagles 5 hits and their pitchers threw two shutouts. On the other hand, Draci scored 18 runs. Even the new players, David Bauer and Marcus Weinzimmer, couldn’t help Eagles to get the win. The second of the two at least got his first hit in Czech Extraliga.
Hroši Brno – Tempo
This is the only series that doesn’t have the winner decided before the Sunday game, as both teams took a win in Brno. Tempo lost the first game despite a great performance from Ethan Skuija. American pitcher striked out 13 batters in 6 innings, but he also walked 7, which home team turned into 5 runs. Hroši took a decisive lead in the second half of the game, after Marek Minařík came in for Skuija. He wasn’t helped by the defense, as Tempo made 6 errors in the game. Home fans could be pleased by two homeruns from South African Tyler Smith, who had his hands in 11-5 win.
The second game was dominated by pitchers. Unfortunately for the home team, their starter Lukáš Ercoli had to leave the mound after 2 innings while Tempo was leading 2-1. He was substituted by Tomáš Ondra, who threw the remainder of the game. He only allowed 1 run in six innings. But even so, it wasn’t enough to get Hroši the win. Jake Rabinowitz and Štěpán Dupal only allowed 1 run and striked out 13 batters. Thanks to this Tempo won 3-1.
The second half of TOP 6 begun and looking at the table, it would seem we have two groups of teams. The first contains Draci, Tempo, and Hroši, who are close to the semifinals. In the second half we see 3 teams with 2 wins, who seem to be destined to fight each other for the last semifinal spot.
