LBFPR: The thirteenth season starts over the weekend

Porto Rican women’s baseball league starts over the weekend with its thirteenth season. The first game will see reigning champions and historically the most successful team of the league from Arecibo travel to Juana Díaz, where they face Las Poetas.

The league grew to eight teams this year, as opposed to 6 that were playing in 2021. The newcomers are Ladies Yankees de Guánica, Las Petroleras de Peñuelas and Las Vejigantes de Ponce who moved their franchise from Ciales.

We can expect a healthy those of games this year, as each team plays 14 of them during the regular season. Top 4 teams will then face each other in the playoffs. There is currently no information on whether the games will be streamed online, however, previous season saw several games streamed mainly on Facebook pages of the clubs.

It will be interesting to see whether any of the teams can dethrone Arecibo, especially as Las Piedras are slowly starting to catching up to the champions. We get to see many of Porto Rico national players in the league. Porto Rico recently finished second at Americas World Cup qualifiers being only beaten by Venezuela in the finals. The two finalists, along with Mexico and Cuba all qualified for the upcoming World Cup.
