Boris Večerka signed with Arizona DiamondBacks
After Los Angeles Angels let go of Vojtěch Menšík in summer, Czech baseball ceased to have any signed player within MLB organization. This changed with Boris Večerka signing his professional contract.
The younger of Večerka brothers follows Viktor, who signed with Kansas City Royals in 2019. Unfortunately, due to Covid and his injury, he didn’t get much chance to play for the organization. Boris, who signed with Arizona, will now get his chance. He caught organization’s eye in autumn, where the young pitcher played at talent showcase in USA.
„I talked to several teams. They were all interested in my speed. Based on their words I have a potential to throw 100 mph. There were a few talks in the hotel and I picked D-backs,“ said Boris Večerka for club web page.
Nineteen year old played three seasons in Czech Extraliga. He threw 34 innings, with 6.35 ERA and 11 SO. But he got everyone’s attention in this year’s playoff, when he entered the game as a reliever against Tempo, after John Hussey‚s injury. Večerka finished the duel, only allowing one hit in six innings he threw. He then added one more gain against Draci, however, he didn’t have as much success in the game. Nevertheless, he will now compete to become the first Czech player to play in MLB.
