International Stars selection to play at the Prague Baseball Week

The 39th year of Prague Baseball Week will take place from Wednesday till Saturday.

The international tournament was supposed to be played in June, however, the Covid-19 pandemic pushed the event at the end of September. With the second wave of the pandemic in progress, the organization of the tournament was severly affected. Originally, the teams from Italy, Germany, Croatia, Slovakia, and Switzerland, who comfirmed their attandance, decided not to come. (trans.) „We were preparing a large international tournament till September, however, the situation in Czech Republic and Europe quickly deteriorated,“ said the ČBA chairman Petr Ditrich.

In the end, four teams will take part in the tournament: Czech Men’s National team, Russian Men’s National team, title defender International Stars, and team consisting of Czech Extraliga players Prague Selection.

Czech National team coach Mike Griffin will see his players after more than six months: (trans.) „We expect players will be ready to win every game. We want to discuss their individual training plans with them, give them impulse to improve further. I will be glad to see some of the younger players as well.“

International Stars team, the winner of two previous years, confirmed their attendance only recently. Russian National team will also be fielding a strong lineup, with several players originally born in Cuba and USA. (trans.) „Russia did everything they could to participate in the tournament, which we really appreciate. They went through Covid testing back home and at the Prague’s airport. I’m glad that despite a smaller number of fans, the tournament will still hold high quality standards,“ said Ditrich day before the tournament.

Tuesday will be spent on trainings. First game starts at 14:00 CEST on Wednesday. As in the previous years, we will also see homerun derby at 16:30 CEST on Friday.

Participants of the tournamnet will have to adhere to strict hygenic rules imposed by the Czech government. While it is possible to come personally, provided the fans will adhere to the rules, the games will be presented online via streams.
