EXL: Draci still without a loss after extra innings

Extraliga Week 3 started with two games on Friday. Fans watching witnessed good baseball, too.

The game between Draci and Hluboká promised a great pitching duel, when both sides started Czech internationals. And the promised was fullfilled. Home pitcher Radim Chroust and away Jan Novák showed excellent pitching, only allowing one run each. Jan Vašourek gave Draci two more good innings and so the game had to be decided in extra innings with score leveld 1-1. Tenth inning belonged to a nineteen year old David Mergans who stepped on the mound for the home team. With two strikeouts he didn’t allow away team any run, despite rules putting two runners on the bases in the extra innings. When home team stepped in the batter box, Martin Červinka bunt resulted into error in defense and Draci grabbed the win with Přemek Chroust’s run. The win means Draci kept their invincibility. For Hluboká the game marked first loss on the field, but they have nothing to be ashmed of.

Second series between Blesk and Eagles, played in Prague, was important due to TOP 6 chances. And it was the home team, who made the first step. Excellent performance by starting pitcher Tomáš Duffek, who only allowed two hits in seven innings, was part of the Eagles success. Jablonec was only able to take one run against him after Zavadil’s error in the seventh inning.

The error came while the home team was leading 8-0. It was also the first game where Czech international Matěj Hejma played for Eagles. He earned a double and two BB in the game. The third of the Eagles hits were thanks to Jan Pojer (3-for-5). Petr Zýma also had an interesting game, despite being 0-for-1. He earned 3 BB and 1 HBP.

In the end, Eagles won 8-1 and are 4-3 on season. On the other hand, Jablonec changes for TOP 6 are currently getting smaller as they remain on the last place with 6 losses.
