College Baseball: NGU with Chlup will play in World Series
Vojtěch Menšík and NC State played in NCAA Division I World Series in the previous season. This year we have another Czech, this time in Division II World Series as Marek Chlup and NGU earned their spot there. On the other hand, the spring season finished for Daniel Padyšák.
North Greenville needed to beat Columbus State to get a chance to play in the tournament with the best of Division II. But the first game showed it won’t be easy. Despite leading the game 2-0, they eventually got behind 3-6. NGU managed to tie the game at 6-6 and get the extra innings. Marek Chlup started it (1/5 2R) in the batting box. He was able to get on a base after a defensive error, then steal the base, which eventually resulted in a run and the win for NGU.
The second game saw something similar, this time for Columbus. They were 1-3 behind before the bottom of the ninth inning, but wrapped up the game with a three run walk-off homerun from Bouton, who sent the series to the third game. The last game of the final started an hour later than planned, but it was well in NGU hands from the beginning. They scored 6 runs in the first inning and kept their lead till the end. In the end, NGU took 13-3 win, with Marek Chlup earning 2 hits and 2 runs. Thanks to the win, NGU will get to play in Division II World Series, which starts on 4th of June in North Carolina. It is yet to be determined, whether Chlup will get to play, as he’s one of the players to play in MLB Draft League that starts two days earlier.
CSU lost in the conference finals
Charleston Southern University wasn’t a favorite before the beginning of the tournament. However, they not only showed great spirit, they also got the the finals for the fifth seed, playing the finals for the first time since 2000 season. CSU won 14-3 against High Point and went to play against the favorites from Campbell Univeristy. CSU trainer sent in Daniel Padyšák, who only allowed 2 runs in 4 innings and was part of CSU success in a surprising 7-6 win. CSU remained in the winner’s bracket. They then faced the second team of the regular season in USC Upstate. Even those weren’t a match for CSU who took 11-4 win, meaning they got to play in the conference finals for the first time in more than 20 years.
There they once again played against Campbell. However, this time Campbell started much faster, scoring 6 runs in the first inning, winning 10-6 in the end. This meant both teams would get to play another game and the winner would continue in the regional tournament. Unfortunately, Campbell turned out to be a tough match and CSU lost the second game 2-3.
