Kelsie Whitmore in the starting lineup for Ferry Hawks for the first time

Another historical milestone for women’s baseball was reached last night when Ferry Hawks placed Kelsie Whitmore in the starting lineup against Honey Hunters. Whitmore became historically first female to start for a team in Atlantic League.

Whitmore is one of two female players signed to a team in Atlantic League. The first one was Alexis Hopkins, who is currently a bullpen catcher for Wild Health Gnomes. But it’s the Ferry Hawks players who had been catching everyone’s attention in recent weeks. Whitmore, who started her professional career in Pacific Association league, where she played 17 games, played her first game in Atlantic League in the previous week when she entered the game as a pinch runner.

Her first game was even more interesting by the fact she was originally signed as a pitcher. This week, she started the game in the left field and in the ninth spot in the lineup. In the end, Ferry Hawks lost the game 5-10 after they let the start of the game slip between their fingers. Honey Hunters scored 6 runs in the first four innings, while Ferry Hawks had to wait until the fifth inning for their first runs. Whitmore finished the game with 2 AB (1 SO, 1 FO) and 1 HBP. She was substituted by Kevin Krause in the eighth inning.

It will be interesting to see how her career progresses and whether she will appear on the mound in the near future. For those interested, you can watch the game at Honey Hunters Youtube channel.
