Slovakia beat Croatia in Varaždin
Aleksander Bekič memorial started in Croatia on Friday. Beside two Croatian teams (senior, U23) we also get to see Hungary and Slovakia. Matej Šišolák’s team faced Croatian’s senior team to start the tournament. And in a game with plenty of runs it was Slovaks who won.
Slovakia didn’t have a good start to the game, when home team was already 5-0 ahead after a number of defensive errors. However, Slovak bats awakened then and Slovakia started to creep in. They entered the last inning 6-8 behind. Slovaks were able to pressure their opponent and they tied the game at 8-8 with one out. Martin Gieci then stepped into the batting box with two runners on bases and he blasted a three run homerun giving his team the lead.
Every Slovak player earned at least a hit. Mário Gottschall had 4 of them, one of which was a two run homerun. Alexander Václavík was close second with three hits and a walk.
Martin Gieci started on the mound and he threw 6 innings, with 0 ER. Samuel Holekši threw an inning and Matej Škerlec then came to close the game.
After the first win, Slovakia will play against Hungary on Saturday. Their opponent lost 3-4 against Croatia U23 team. Were Slovaks to win, they would come much closer to winning the entire tournament.
